What are Airfreight Forwarders?
An airfreight forwarder may or may not be an IATA appointed agent. An airfreight agent, wheter appointed by IATA or not, presents shipments to an airline 'ready for carriage'. An IATA agent receives remuneration in the form of a commision from the airline.
An airfreight forwarder offers other services to his customer such as advice on routing and shipping, insurance, customs documentaion and clearance through customs, documentary credits and other matter relating to international trade.
A forwarder may group a number of consignments together and present these as one shipment to an airline. In the airfreight rate structures 'the higher the weight the lower the rate' (per kilo) so individual consignments in a group can be shipped at a lower rate than if shipped as an individual consignment.
This is called 'consolidation' and the freight forwarder operating such services to different destinations is called a 'consolidator'. The consolidation is consigned to a forwarder at the destination airport who is called the 'break-bulk' agent. His job is to distribute the individual consignments and collect any freight charges due on them.
